Society

  • Sep. 16th, 2009 at 12:38 PM

I look around everyday and I can only conclude that some things in our society are fundamentally wrong. I don't think they were always this way, but have devolved to a lower state. Accountability in any form is almost completely extinct. People can get away with almost anything without having to blame themselves. I don't understand. If I do something wrong or screw up, I suck it up and take responsibility for it. I hate excuses and even if I had one, I wouldn't use it.

Finance:
Prime example of lack of financial accountability right now is our economy. People have no idea how to deal with money. People don't save, and most certainly most don't understand the concept of interest, whether credited or debited. Our society is and will remain in serious danger if current practices continue.

I know countless younger adults, who already have maxed out several credit cards. We shouldn't be encouraging credit towards young, or towards anyone. Buy what you can afford. If you can't afford to pay off your entire balance of your credit card each month, then you are spending more than you make and digging yourself further into the red. What's worse is the mid to upper 20's who still rely on their parents to pay for certain things. Hello!? You're on your old. Grow up and figure out how to live for yourselves. It's not up to your mommy and daddy to help you get a new car, pay for your cell phone, etc. If you want these things, haul ass and do it yourself. There are no excuses here. They really shouldn't even be living at home.

People of all ages seem to think they are entitled to certain things: a new car, a house, designer clothes, etc. Well, guess what... people aren't entitled to anything. Nothing at all. You have to work towards anything, and if you can't do that, you are going to screw yourself at some point in life.

Retirement. How many older adults are nearing retirement? All the baby boomers are at least. Most do not have enough to survive even a few years. Others try to rely on their pensions. Bad idea. Pensions are fixed and are usually little more than a stipend. Save your money early. A few months earlier in an exponential equations can actually shave off years of waiting for retirement.

Real Estate:
Why did people think they were entitled to a house. Who would ever think to get or approve a mortgage without income verification and a credit check. Houses are a big expense, and mortgages really should only be offered to those who will repay the loan. Not everyone can afford a house. If you don't make enough, and don't have a down payment, you shouldn't buy a house. You aren't entitled to one because of your age or anything else. Deal with it. It's your own fault if you can't afford one.

Relationships and Kids:
I think the best example of the point I'm trying to make comes from the movie Idiocracy. The opening scene shows two different couples: One where both are highly paid professionals, the other high school white trash dropouts. The smart couple decides to focus on getting a house and career before they start having kids. The white trash immediately start popping out kids. It progresses, the smart couple gets to busy to have kids, and then eventually too old. By then, the family tree of the white trash has vastly expanded. The point being that the dumb are procreating at a much faster rate than the smart. This inevitably deteriorates the gene pool.

The other thing that gets me is the age of relationships and marriage and children. People spend the first 30 years of their lives growing up. The result is that people don't marry until their 30s and have kids after that. People in their 20's are still out trying to party and mess around. They claim they don't want a real relationship or a commitment, but that is crap. Others say they want to be career focused or travel the world first before they settle down. It's all a dumb excuse and these people are still kids inside and are afraid of anything in the real world. Grow up and get a life.

Conclusion:

So why are things like this? Because people take no responsibilities for their actions. They rely on government programs, their parents, or any other excuse they can think of to get through life. So Parents, teach your kids some responsibility. They will thank you later in life when they can stand on their own two feet. I wasn't coddled as a kid or given any free handouts. As a result I gained priceless common sense. I am completely financially stable, hold a good steady job, and don't look for every opportunity to get  a free handout or excuse. I see my own problems and set my own goals to fix them.

Basically... suck it up people. Life's not that bad. Figure it out and do it yourself. You make all your own choices. If you make the wrong one, fix it and learn from it. Be accountable for your own actions.

Joe Wilson

  • Sep. 16th, 2009 at 9:57 AM
So all this hype about Joe Wilson is really starting to aggravate me. Its really bringing out the worst in American Politics on both sides. On the Republican side, it has done nothing to improve the bullheaded, obstructive image of the GOP. I don't support what Joe Wilson did, but I completely do support his post outburst actions. Democrats are making such a big deal out of this, that they look petty and that they have other hidden agenda.

I believe that what Joe Wilson did, was strictly emotional and spontaneous. I forgive him for what he did. After all, I think all of us have let emotions get the better of us at some point or another. Also, he immediately apologized to Obama... the only one who could, and should take any offense from his behavior. Obama accepted his apology, so it's a done deal right? Well, apparently not.

Now the house (democrats) demand a floor apology. To whom I ask? He already apologized to the one person of who he was disrespectful. I think those who think an accepted apology from our president is not good enough, should apologize themselves.

When this whole shenanigan started, I was a little perturbed by Wilson's actions. I couldn't help but think that he made the whole bi partisanship struggle worse, and he may have. I kept thinking he gave democrats an excuse to jump all over republicans and push their bills through without any republican support. The democrats, however, have taken the situation out of control. They have halted progress of anything else and instead are focusing on rehashing Wilson's actions over and over. They probably think they are gaining support and pulling people away from wanting a bipartisan option. They have accomplished the opposite. They have managed to annoy the general public and ultimately will hurt their cause.

I applaud Joe Wilson for not apologizing to the house. He has no need to. He is now the better man and I approve of his actions.  If the Democrats continue to push this, I believe Wilson and the GOP will gain popularity.
